Family Therapy Theory: What Is Important in the Training of Today's Family Counselors?University of Virginia Family therapy theory as it relates to the training of novice family counselors is explored in this article. The increasing number of theories and recent advances in the field have complicated the decision regarding what theories should be taught in introductory family counseling courses. Questions are posed concerning whether the traditional theories should be taught as they were originally conceptualized or whether integration should begin in the early stages of training. The importance of incorporating a cultural lens regardless of theoretical perspective is emphasized.
