M. Carole Pistole

Purdue University, pistole{at}purdue.edu

Gia Marson

Calabasas, California

There continues to be concern that there is some basic flaw in today’s families. The authors suggest that the family is vital and thriving, although in more diverse structures than were visible previously. The authors use television programming to illustrate the composition and functioning of today’s families and discuss information relevant to professional education and counseling persons/families with developmental issues.

Key Words: family structure • parasocial relationships • counseling • family counseling • long-distance relationships
