Health Counseling With Individuals, Couples, and Families: Three Perspectives on Ethical and Professional Practice

Len Sperry

Florida Atlantic University

Whether working with individuals, couples, or families, counselors and therapists espouse at least three different views or perspectives on the relationship of professional ethics and professional practice. Needless to say, these perspectives influence the therapeutic relationship and the treatment process whether the client’s concern involves health or other issues. The article provides detailed sketches of each of these three perspectives and implications for clinical practice.

Key Words: ethical perspectives • clinical implications • health counseling • couples and families
