"Union Differentiates": Pierre Teilhard de Chardin’s Philosophy Applied to Couple Relationships

Philosopher, scientist, and theologian Pierre Teilhard de Chardin used his scientific and theological knowledge to devise philosophical ideas to explain the development of humans and their continuing evolutionary development of the noosphere—the thinking and conscious layer of his evolutionary model. This article extends Teilhard’s thoughts into the realm of committed couple relationships. Couples in relationships that use dialogical communication to work through difficulties and to seek understanding are operating at a level of increased complexity in an effort to re-image the relationship and, thus, add to their conscious, relational knowledge. Teilhard’s theories are briefly explained and then expanded into couple relationships with some suggestions on how the couple therapist can use this theory in their practice.
