The Pain BondLoyola University Medical Center, drensha{at}lumc.edu Pain is explored as a significant issue in the lives of persons experiencing chronic and debilitating illnesses as well as their care-givers and family members. Although medicine has evolved to provide pharmacological and effective procedures to reduce or manage pain, there remains a special interpersonal bond between sufferer and comforter. Emotional and interpersonal dimensions of the pain bond are discussed in the context of stressors associated with living with chronic pain.
