Using Dreams in Family TherapyCalifornia State University-Stanislaus Dreams have apparently been viewed as individual phenomena with little to offer to systemic therapy. Current literature suggests that dreams are seldom used by marriage and family therapists. Yet, dreams can be powerful tools in bypassing resistance, in conceptualizingfamily dynamics, in identifying contextual variables that need to be considered, and in generating positive alternatives to the current dysfunction. Included are clinical examples that demonstrate the effective use of dreams in marriage and family therapy and a discussion of the interface between dream interpretation and systems therapy.
