A Case of Individual Rights versus the Common Good: "Right versus Right"

Recently, in her capacity as a supervisor the author was presented with the following ethical dilemma: Her supervisee was seeing a client who told her that he was going to seekadmission to the author's counseling program. In addition, the supervisee expressed grave concerns about the client's ability to work as a counselor because of his alcohol problems-binge drinking and blackouts-and denial of the problems. This article addresses the following questions: What are a supervisor's ethical responsibilities to his or her supervisee and to the client? What are his or her ethical responsibilities as a faculty member with information about a potential student? Could there be legal implications of using this information to deny admission to the program?
