Surviving Suicide: The Impact on the FamilyUniversity of Virginia The impact of suicide on the surviving family members has not been thoroughly examined in the literature. This column explores the impact of the suicide of an individual who belonged to a family with two parents and more than one sibling. Parental and sibling grief reactions are provided. Factors related to the family systems adaptation as well as the adaptation of parental/marital and sibling subsystems are discussed. Finally, interventions and recommendations for helping professionals working with surviving family members are offered.
